كشف عامل بيماري سياه‏زخم توسط "لويي پاستور" پزشك فرانسوي (1881م) (ر.ك: 8 سپتامبر) باکتری باسیلوس آنتراسیس عامل بیماری سیاه زخم است. نام های دیگر این بیماری در زبان انگلیسی آنتراکس (Anthrax) و به فرانسوی شاربن است. نام آنتراکس از کلمه یونانی (anthrakis) به معنی ذغال گرفته شده که بدلیل زخم سیاه رنگی هست که در این بیماری بوجود می‌ آید. از بیماریهای مشترک انسان و تعداد زیادی از حیوانات است که البته در حیوانات شایعتر و در انسان کمتر هست.
